Just like any other invention, dry cleaning came out from an accident. It all happened in 1855 when Jean Baptiste Jolly, a French dye-works owner noticed that his table cloth was cleaner right after his helper accidentally overturned a kerosene lamp on it. He then offered a new service in his dye-works company which was called ‘dry cleaning’.
What is Dry Cleaning?
Dry cleaning is a process of washing textiles and clothing with a special fluid or liquid instead of water. The fact that there is no water used in this cleaning process is the reason why it is called ‘dry cleaning’.
A Little History
Before, dry cleaners used different kinds of solvent which include gasoline and kerosene to clean clothes and fabrics. The United States then followed this process however but with the use of better machines and way better and safer solvents. After World War II, a new solvent was found which is better and safer than kerosene and gasoline. This solvent is called perchlorethylene (perc) and it became the number one choice in the industry. Nowadays, majority of the Dry Cleaners Company and providers use perc for dry cleaning.
The Process
There are steps that are strictly followed by the dry cleaners for a good result. The steps that you will be reading below are the common procedures that you will see in any dry cleaning companies. 1. They examine your clothes for any missing buttons, tears, etc.

Other Uses of Dry Cleaning
Dry Cleaning can also be done with textiles and other things. While water is the universal solvent, it is still won’t give a better result compared to using perc and other solvent available. Aside from that, water is conserved while keeping a well cleaned clothes and textiles can be attained through dry cleaning that’s why it has become a good business and of course a process for cleaning.
